About this route
The Northern Sea Route (NSR) is defined in Russian law as the water area between the western entrances of the Kara Gate / Cape Zhelaniya and the Bering Strait. Transit requires permission from the NSR Administration; icebreaker escort is mandatory in many ice conditions. Cargo is dominated by LNG, oil and ore exports from Russian Arctic projects rather than international transit.
